Welcome to the Sisterhood

The power of women gathering is immeasurable.” - Author Unknown

This quote caught my eye today. In the past few years and lately, especially, I have felt completely embraced and accepted by other women and, let me tell you, it feels amazing! These are women who throw their hearts wide open and say "Come on in! We are so glad you are here!" There is no secret handshake, no certain way one has to act or look to get into the club. They only see each woman they meet as a potential sister-friend without sizing them up or breaking them down. They accept each as beautiful image-bearers of God; fearfully and wonderfully made and fully embraced. Do you know how rare this is? They are a shimmering needle in the world's huge haystack of harm and when you find them you feel like you just won life's lottery jackpot.

In the age of social media, the attacks on each other are more common and vicious than ever. But, of course, this is nothing new - it's a tale as old as time. I do not know exactly when it starts or why, but girls even from an early age can just be plain cruel to each other. Instead of aligning with and encouraging our different gifts and traits and beauty marks, we all too often slice and divide, aiming hurtful judgement, often dipped in jealousy, and sling the stone. This, it seems, is a universal stain on girlhood. I have yet to meet one who has not been the target of the flaming-mean-girl-arrows at one time or another.

As women, we must lift and build up our fellow sisters! And, when one forgets her worth and when she feels forgotten and unseen or worse, unloved, we must be the first to encourage her gifts and help her succeed; this is God's vision of sisterhood. There is indeed power when we gather around in unity; all for one and one for all. This is our God-imprinted calling:

"So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind...." (1 Thess. 5:11 MSG)

Don't you love this? "...no one left out, no one left behind." Wow. Yes, let this be our mantra! All are invited to come to the table with their name handwritten on the place-card. Welcome sister, we've been waiting for you and eagerly expecting you! You are safe with us, we'll make sure of that.

I have found women such as this and they are like air to my heart's lungs. Thank You Lord. And thank you, God-reflecting women - you are more precious than you know.

Question: Are you afraid of gathering with women because of your past experiences? Can I encourage you today to try again? Look for those who truly reflect Christ and trust me, you will find new life there. It is a very worthy cause and worth another chance.
